Career & Professional Development

In addition to supporting academic and scientific success for students, the Graduate College promotes the development of a comprehensive set of professional skills and offers a wide range of career services. Our career and professional development programming includes monthly seminars, the Preparing Future Faculty program, the GREAT Symposium, and the "Beyond the Proffessoriate" career training platform. Additionally, trainees can connect with OK Catalyst and OU's Tom Love Innovation Hub which support discovery and innovation, tech development, and business start-ups.

We also encourage trainees to actively engage with the campus, the community and with each other. Students can get involved in campus leadership and volunteer opportunities as well as STEM promotion and outreach. The Graduate College participates in numerous events to showcase research in biomedical and health sciences, and, to promote opportunities in these fields and career paths.

Seminar Series & Workshops  GREAT Symposium

Career Exploration

Students with an advanced degree in biomedical or health sciences can pursue a multitude of career paths. Our trainees go on to become scientists, teachers, care providers, administrators, grant and funding specialists, scientific or medical writers, policy advocates, and entrepreneurs. 

To showcase different career opportunities, we feature alumni panels and industry professionals as part of our Seminar Series and annual GREAT Symposium. Additionally, we collaborate with Price Business College Entrepreneurship Faculty and the Tom Love Innovation Hub to provide programming geared towards innovation, commercialization, and business development while also providing important networking opportunities that allow trainees to engage with Oklahoma's entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The Graduate College also provides access to Beyond the Professoriate for PhD students and postdocs across all disciplines. Through two programs of study, users are empowered to make informed decisions about their career path and learn successful job search strategies from other PhDs. This eLearning platform also includes on-demand, self-paced learning modules dedicated to writing and communication, productivity and time management, networking, and interview preparation, among others. A certificate of completion is issued for select modules. Users can also access an extensive video library to hear from PhDs working in diverse job sectors, as well as monthly webinars and career fairs.  

Designed and built by PhDs, Beyond the Professoriate benefits students and postdocs by:

  • supporting career exploration
  • providing accessible , well-curated resources
  • promoting engaged learning through reflective activities
  • complementing existing professional development
  • offering recorded seminars, reflective prompts, and assessments that guide the user experience and foster user engagement
