50th GREAT Symposium to Feature Opening Plenary Session with Dr. Suzanne Ortega

The OUHSC Graduate College is proud to kick off the 50th Graduate Research Education and Technology (GREAT) Symposium with an opening plenary session featuring Dr. Suzanne Ortega, President of the Council of Graduate Schools. Dr. Ortega will present “Thriving in Turbulent Times: Finding Purpose and Agency in the Work We Do” on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. in the Bird Library Auditorium.
A distinguished leader in graduate education and research, Dr. Ortega has dedicated her career to advancing graduate studies, academic affairs, and public service. Since becoming President of the Council of Graduate Schools in 2014, she has worked to support graduate students and institutions through research, policy development, and advocacy. Her background in sociology, with research focusing on mental health epidemiology, health services, and race and ethnic relations, has shaped her extensive contributions to higher education.
Dr. Ortega’s talk will offer valuable insights into navigating challenges in academia and research, emphasizing the importance of resilience, purpose, and agency in shaping impactful careers. As a former university administrator and researcher with over $6 million in funded grants, she brings a wealth of experience to share with students, faculty, and trainees at this year’s milestone event.
The GREAT Symposium is an annual tradition that celebrates research and professional development for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at OUHSC.
