HSC Graduate Student Alexa Beathard Featured in National Magazine for Life-Saving Research

Published: Thursday, July 17, 2025

Alexa K. Beathard, a PhD candidate in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Graduate College, was recently featured in the Summer 2025 edition of Phi Kappa Phi Forum, the national magazine of one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor societies.

The feature highlights Beathard’s research in drug development aimed at treating tuberculosis (TB)—one of the leading causes of death from infectious disease worldwide. Her work—driven by a passion for global health and strengthened by cross-institutional collaboration—seeks to improve outcomes for millions affected by the condition each year.

Beathard received a competitive Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Research Grant to support her efforts. In the article, she describes how the funding allowed her to purchase essential lab supplies and, more importantly, opened doors to a broader network of researchers working toward similar goals. “I’ve connected with scientists I wouldn’t have known otherwise,” she said in the piece. “It’s really helped me think bigger about the potential of this work.”

Her story in Phi Kappa Phi Forum emphasizes the importance of research that not only advances scientific understanding but also holds the potential to make a tangible impact on human health around the world. It also speaks to the power of mentorship, collaboration, and the kind of academic environment fostered at HSC Graduate College.

As Beathard continues her doctoral research, she remains focused on her ultimate goal: bringing a new, more effective treatment to the people who need it most. Her story is a reminder of the vital role graduate students play in shaping the future of science and public health.
