Published: Wednesday, March 26, 2025

The OUHSC Graduate College is honored to welcome Dr. Louis Justement as the keynote speaker for the 50th Graduate Research Education and Technology (GREAT) Symposium. Dr. Justement, a professor in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a nationally recognized leader in biomedical research and policy, will deliver his keynote address, “What You Can Do to Help Secure the Future of Biomedical Research,” on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. in the Bird Library Auditorium.

With a distinguished career spanning scientific research, education, and advocacy, Dr. Justement has been a driving force in shaping policies that support the biomedical research community. As a past president of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) and a long-time advocate for diversity and professional development in science, he brings a wealth of experience and insight to his keynote. His leadership in science policy, graduate education, and workforce development has made a lasting impact on the next generation of researchers.

Dr. Justement’s keynote will address the critical role that scientists, educators, and students play in advancing biomedical research and ensuring its sustainability. He will explore ways to strengthen advocacy efforts, promote evidence-based decision-making, and create pathways for emerging researchers to thrive in a rapidly evolving scientific landscape.

The GREAT Symposium, now celebrating its 50th year, serves as a premier platform for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to present their research, engage with peers, and gain valuable professional development experiences. This year’s event promises to be especially impactful, featuring inspiring talks, competitive presentations, and networking opportunities.

Join us on April 2 for this insightful keynote and be part of the conversation on shaping the future of biomedical research.
